A Winter’s Tale
Students from Norwich School sixth form braved the cold and slept out in Norwich Cathedral cloisters to raise money for local young people’s charity the Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) on Saturday 24th November 2007. The students had nothing but sleeping bags, blankets, and good intentions to shelter them. The students have sought sponsorship for the sleepover and the more money that can be raised for the project, the better. To support the students and warm their spirits you can donate to MAP by clicking here. The student-run Appeals Committee along with Charlie Horwood, newly graduated from the school, worked with MAP and Norwich Cathedral to arrange the sponsored sleepover to raise much needed funds. Charlie Horwood is working with MAP as a fundraising intern for part of his gap year before going to medical school next autumn, and to help him raise funds to get him to India to spend time with another valuable charitable project there. ‘Having Charlie here with us has further strengthened the links we have with Norwich School’ said Victoria Smillie, MAP Director. ‘The interest and support we have from pupils and staff at the school is hugely encouraging and heartening’ she added ‘and especially as they have elected to support us entirely of their own volition starting with a jazz evening they organised last year.’ Between 750 and 900 young people access MAP each month, and last year MAP offered nearly 3,000 counselling hours, yet there is still a waiting list. Each hour spent with a young person costs between £40-£50 to provide: MAP constantly needs to raise funds to continue its vital work helping young people, many of them with nowhere else to turn.
